Resumen: De las muchas posibilidades de lectura de Antígona de Sófocles destacamos la naturaleza del conflicto trágico, que tiene sus raíces en valores anteriores al orden social establecido y que puede considerarse material útil para una refundación del estatuto político en la posmodernidad. A partir del comentario de texto señalamos que Antígona no atenta contra el orden social, sino que espera consolidarlo en un fundamento imperturbable; que encarna la crítica de la racionalidad instrumental, inaugurada por la sofística y reavivada sucesivamente (...) en la modernidad; que afirma existencialmente una ética del amor fraterno como humanización del orden del universo. Proponemos ampliar la noción de hermano consanguíneo y extenderla a la idea de hermano como “el otro” en el marco de las sociedades posmodernas, espacios de intención multicultural, para tener un principio de rescate ético. En esta re-lectura se actualizan las nociones arcaicas de religiosidad, honra fúnebre y piedad familiar.: Of the many possible readings of Sophocles' Antigone, we highlight the nature of the tragic conflict, which has its roots in previous values to the established social order, and which can be considered useful material for re-founding the political status in postmodernity. From the text commentary, we note that Antigone does not attack the social order, but she hopes to consolidate it on an imperturbable basis that embodies the critique of instrumental rationality, inaugurated by sophistry and revived successively in modernity. This affirms existentially the ethics of fraternal love as a humanization of the order of the universe. We propose to extend the notion of consanguineous brother and extend it to the idea of brother as “the other” in the framework of postmodern societies, spaces of multicultural intention, to have a principle of ethical rescue. In this re-reading, the archaic notions of religiosity, funeral honor, and family piety are updated. (shrink)

Résumé Si Lyotard n’a jamais traité explicitement de l’enregistrement musical, il en propose une pensée en creux dans Des dispositifs pulsionnels et L’inhumain. Contrairement à Adorno ou Benjamin, Lyotard n’accuse pas l’enregistrement de faire de la musique une marchandise comme une autre au sein du système capitaliste. C’est la musique classique occidentale elle-même qui est intrinsèquement mécanique et capitaliste, l’enregistrement ne faisant que renforcer ce processus fondamental, à l’œuvre plus particulièrement dans la « nouvelle musique » de Schoenberg. Mais la (...) loi des séries n’est pas le fin mot de la musique. La plus classique des sonates est toujours postmoderne, en ce qu’un événement sonore inaudible y est présent à travers l’audible, en ce qu’à travers les variations incessantes un thème fondamental toujours absent est présent. Toute musique entendue n’est que l’enregistrement d’un tel événement. Loin de voir dans l’enregistrement musical un accident de la musique, Lyotard pense donc essentiellement la musique comme un enregistrement. (shrink)

This paper makes a critique of time in the music of the period, and in musical thought of the period (taking for granted that the music and the thought are eseentially related). In this context, the question is raised, what conception of time is to be found in the philosophers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries? This article seeks to offer a socially and politically situated analysis of the disenchantment produced by sociological research categorised as critical. It offers a step-by-step comparison of how a study on voluntary work (that produced disenchantment for some, truism for others) was received. It also gives weight to the fact that a research process can also lead to the politicisation of research. The article sheds light on two arguments for the autonomy of engagement that lies at the heart of the (...) critique of a critique: one concerning the autonomy of the actors’ “citizen engagement” and of their relation to work, and the other concerning the autonomy of the researcher’s work and its “commitments”, generally presented as “research neutrality”. This reflexive attention to the effects of the research investigation not only on others but also on the author of the research ultimately questions the social and political scope of the “conception of hostile worlds” inscribed in the “doctrine of separated spheres” of work and commitment that, in the present case, concerns both the object and the practice of research. Background In June 2016, the Parliament of Canada passed federal legislation allowing eligible adults to request Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID). Since its implementation, there likely exists a degree of hesitancy among some healthcare providers due to the law being inconsistent with personal beliefs and values. It is imperative to explore how nurses in Quebec experience the shift from accompanying palliative clients through “a natural death” to participating in “a premeditated death.” Research question/aim/objectives This study aims to explore how Quebec (...) nurses personally and professionally face the new practice of MAID and their role evolution. Research design A grounded theory design was used. Participants and research context We recruited 37 nurses who participated in or coordinated at least one MAID. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted and audiotaped. Data collection and analysis followed Strauss and Corbin steps. Ethical considerations Ethics approval was received from the investigator’s affiliated University. Participants were informed regarding the research goal, signed a written consent, and were assigned pseudonyms. Findings/results Results show that nurses experienced the wide range of paradoxe during MAID centering around the following eight elements: 1) confrontation abouth death, 2) choice, 3) time of death, 4) emotional load, 5) new Bill, 6) relationship with the person, 7) communication skills, and 8) healthcare setting. The shifting of views and values in this new role is presented by the contradiction of opposites. Conclusions A better understanding of the paradox experienced by nurses involved with MAID paves the way for the development of interventions. (shrink)

Gender scholars argued that gendered organizations theory needs updating as organizational logic has shifted amid neoliberal workplace transformations. This qualitative case study of a high-tech firm reveals how features of the traditional work logic remain resilient. I analyze the gendered implications of a high-tech startup restructuring and going public, finding the flexible organization to bureaucratize, implementing specialized jobs and a hierarchy with standardized career ladders. Going public creates conflicting gendered logics that place women at a structural disadvantage, relegating them to (...) low-status, narrow jobs while simultaneously demanding masculine ideal worker norms of visibility and self-promotion. Despite networking, women experience job insecurity and a glass ceiling, while men are assumed ideal workers and advance. By tracing one high-tech firm’s restructuring from a startup to public company, I demonstrate how the collision of new and traditional workplace logics perpetuates gender inequalities. (shrink)

Une série de blocs en calcaire cristallin gris noir et gréseux gris ont été découverts remployés sous la forme d’éléments architectoniques divers (bases de colonnes, seuils, marches ou linteaux par exemple) au sein du palais néopalatial de Malia. Leur observation détaillée a permis de déterminer qu’ils provenaient d’une assise de nivellement dans la façade Ouest du palais détruit à la fin de la période protopalatiale. Les matériaux utilisés et le soin apporté au façonnage des blocs illustrent la qualité du projet (...) architectural. Leur restitution au sein du palais protopalatial de Malia met également en évidence le parallèle avec les façades Ouest des palais de Knossos et Phaistos, et suggère l’existence d’une communauté de pratiques architecturales entre les différents palais crétois au Protopalatial. Clinical trials emerged in rapid succession as the COVID-19 pandemic created an unprecedented need for life-saving therapies. Fair and equitable subject selection in clinical trials offering investigational therapies ought to be an urgent moral concern. Subject selection determines the distribution of risks and benefits, and impacts the applicability of the study results for the larger population. While Research Ethics Committees monitor fair subject selection within each trial, no standard oversight exists for subject selection across multiple trials for the same disease. (...) Drawing on the experience of multiple clinical trials at a single academic medical centre in the USA, we posit that concurrent COVID-19 trials are liable to unfair and inequitable subject selection on account of scientific uncertainty, lack of transparency, scarcity and, lastly, structural barriers to equity compounded by implicit bias. To address the critical gap in the current literature and international regulation, we propose new ethical guidelines for research design and conduct that bolsters fair and equitable subject selection. Although the proposed guidelines are tailored to the research design and protocol of concurrent trials in the COVID-19 pandemic, they may have broader relevance to single COVID-19 trials. (shrink)

Originally published in 1944, this book presents a study of the life and work of Roman Catholic priest and scholar Alfred Loisy, written by fellow Modernist Maude Petre. Petre died shortly after completing this short biography, and the text begins with a note on her life by James A. Walker. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in this important figure in the controversial Catholic Modernist movement.

Cette conjoncture est propice au déferlement de contre-discours dits complotistes dans les arènes numériques et autres « forums hybrides ». Les institutions publiques et médiatiques, en privilégiant une approche épistémologique basée sur le debunking, échouent à comprendre la préférence d’une frange de la population pour les vérités « alternatives » au détriment des preuves scientifiques. En analysant les formes (...) médiatiques et alèthurgiques d’un tel contre-discours, nous montrons comment il se nourrit de l’incertitude pour asseoir son pouvoir et son autorité, témoignant du retour d’une (mauvaise) parrêsia. Dans Art et Scolastique, Maritain ne pense pas seulement l’art comme une technique, mais comme une vertu intellectuelle. Pour mieux saisir l’originalité de cette thèse, il faut la resituer dans le moment artistique et philosophique des années 1920. Maritain n’était pas hostile à la modernité artistique : la gageure d’ Art et Scolastique consiste à penser l’art du présent grâce aux concepts thomasiens pour construire une théorie néothomiste originale du bel art. Mais peut-on rigoureusement penser la création artistique avec les (...) outils conceptuels de Thomas d’Aquin? The first occurrence of the Latin word ‘totalitas’ can be dated back to the 12th century. ‘Totalitas’ is not quite synonymous with the Aristotelian signification of whole’s quiddity. In fact, in his Commentary on the Sentences, Albert the Great hesitates between a pseudo-Augustinian definition of totalitas and a Peripatetic one. According to the first definition, totalitas is beyond the classical relationship between a whole and its parts; on the contrary, it refers to the capacity of the soul to be present (...) to itself without being a whole that is composed of parts. By contrast, according to the second definition, totalitas is to be identified with universitas. Although this second signification became the standard one in 13th century, Albert the Great attempts to juxtaposing the pseudo-Augustinian and the Peripatetic significations by means of the notion of totum potestativum. Contrairement à Aristote, les hypothèses réalistes modernes ne considèrent pas qu’une musique puisse être littéralement colérique ou pathétique. Dès lors que ce n’est que métaphoriquement ou imaginairement que la musique peut être décrite ainsi, se pose la question du sujet de ces prédicats. L’hypothèse de Kendall Walton est qu’il y a bien une fiction musicale, même dans les œuvres strictement instrumentales. L’auditeur feint de croire que quelqu’un ou quelque chose est mélancolique ou en colère, ce qui suffit pour parler de (...) fiction musicale, puisqu’un jeu de faire-semblant est impliqué. Décrire adéquatement la signification d’un terme, ou d’un énoncé, suppose souvent de faire appel au co-texte ou au contexte. Le linguiste doit alors recourir à des corpus authentiques et proposer des procédures de contextualisation. Une telle démarche, que l’on peut à bon droit qualifier d’étique, est loin d’être suffisante. Elle ne tient pas compte des stratégies de contextualisation et de recontextualisation des discours par les locuteurs eux-mêmes, sans aucun doute liées à l’existence d’une compétence métalinguistique et métapragmatique. La contextualisation est (...) donc aussi un problème émique. Dans le cadre d’une enquête ethnographique au sein d’une troupe de théâtre, incluant l’observation et l’enregistrement audiovisuel des différentes activités des comédiens, on s’est intéressé aux phases de travail théâtral – lecture à la table et répétitions – pendant lesquelles les participants se confrontent à des textes qui leur posent des difficultés d’interprétation. Face à des énoncés dont la signification ne fait pas nécessairement problème, mais dont le sens en contexte peut sembler problématique, les comédiens et les metteurs en scène sont amenés à devoir recontextualiser. Nous étudierons ces pratiques de contextualisation, leur émergence – soit parce que les participants l’exigent, soit parce que les locuteurs eux-mêmes en éprouvent la nécessité pour parvenir à une pertinence communicative plus forte – en en soulignant la dimension collective.
